The creation of a band's first album is akin to taking a journey into the unknown. To arrive at the final destination, steering a path safely through the many pitfalls and challenges, is an achievement in itself. However, starting that journey as six individuals, arriving at an unexpected but satisfying and distinctive end as a cohesive force, perhaps best describes the creation of this album!

The concept behind LinnTilla was first developed in the summer of 2004 by Murray Grainger, Steafan Hannigan and Saskia Tomkins, all members of the former band "Mahogany Gaspipes". The idea behind the new band was to explore the fusion of modern grooves with melodies and songs from the traditional world. To this end they were joined by Cecilia le Poer Power, Dave Neville and Nye Parsons.

The creative process for LinnTilla is fascinating, because each member approaches from diverse backgrounds and experiences. However, this is perhaps the band's main strength, as the collision of styles triggers an explosion of possibilities, with the end result being an original and exciting blend of ideas. Jazz, Rock, Classical, Celtic, and World influences all combine to create an emotionally moving, mentally stimulating, and thought provoking new sound.

The final twist on the journey occurred on the recording of the album when Declan Flynn, producer and engineer for the project, brought his years of experience from the commercial scene. The blending of the band's singular style of music, and his production and musical expertise, has taken the music to an unprecedented level.

So the journey ends…the destination greets us with exquisite vocals, haunting uilleann pipes, the excitement of fiddle and accordion, combined with the drive of keyboards, drums and bass to create a rousing and invigorating experience. Of course, like all journeys, this isn't the end, merely the first steps into a much larger world where the possibilities have just begun to reveal themselves. Enjoy the pit-stop, this is just the beginning…

Dana and Susan Robinson - "Native Soil" - TM 0048

Dana and Susan's first album of mainly traditional material

"NATIVE SOIL"

UK Release date - January 2005

American singer and songwriter, Dana Robinson first started touring in the UK in 2001 and has returned to play more arts centres, folk clubs and festivals each year, initially solo and recently accompanied by Susan on vocals, banjo and guitar.

Born from popular request by their audiences in the UK, Native Soil is Dana and Susan's debut recording as a duo. Native Soil has one foot rooted in southern old-time stringband tradition and the other in an all-culture blend of third-world rhythms, crooked English ballads, funky banjo originals, and tight vocal harmonies.

Dana writes,  "I've made my living as a songwriter yet I could never write the way I do without the influence of traditional music. The music of our ancestors is the rich soil from which all new music arises.  Music of Scots, Irish, African, and native American origin has been continually re-interpreted and recycled through generations to become something uniquely American, and has arisen out of what I call our Native Soil. This collection of songs, most old and a few new, is our contribution to that process." - DR

"Newtime old-time music," they call it as Native Soil pays homage to great old songs and tunes and allows them to shine with a fresh and vital energy.

... and time goes on ... - OFFCD 00101 - Sheila Stewart

Songs and Stories Amazingly, this is the first time that any of Sheila's stories have been made widely available on a recording. With the increasing interest in vernacular oral storytelling has come numerable requests for material and Sheila, like so many of the 'tradition bearers', is keen to oblige. Indeed the initiative for these recordings came from Sheila herself ... and the stories are her own choice. From an early age Sheila was deliberately exposed to songs and stories and as a child grew up accompanied by classic ballads, comic songs and 'mak-ye-ups' and, of course, stories and legends. 'Discovered' in 1954, the Stewarts of Blair - Sheila, with her mother Belle, father Alec and sister Cathie - were regular performers in folk clubs and festivals and were frequently recorded in the 1960's.

When her mother died in 1997, Sheila's inherited sense of responsibility to "maintain" these family songs and stories was also accompanied by a realisation that they needed to be passed on for the sake of this oral culture. I had the initial privilege and pleasure to sit and record 'at the feet' of this 'Queen of Storytelling' so that you may listen by your own 'fireside'. All life is here - stories of mere mortals, of kings, princesses, cruel stepmothers, nervous genies, tramps, shoemakers, priests and feathered-friends in tales of love, cunning, reincarnation, infanticide and even cannibalism. Additionally, we have a few songs. So listen ... enjoy ... appreciate ... and pass on the stories. All we ask is that you try to make the tale your own... but do credit the source .....Sheila Stewart. Doc Rowe - Recording Engineer.
